Study in Austria

austria flagMany students studying in Austria come from abroad. It makes Austria one of the world’s most inclusive countries for education. But there is room for more: the number grew by over 80% over the last 4-year period. There are now PhD candidates from some 80 countries working towards their degrees in Austria.

Increasing numbers of international students are choosing Austria as their overseas study destination. Austria offers an education experience that makes a real difference. Graduates from Austria are very successful in finding jobs and hold prominent positions worldwide. Additionally, they are readily accepted for postgraduate study at leading international universities.

Many young people come to Austria to either do their entire studies or part of them here. Concurrently with the increase in diversity and number of international students, standard and reputation of the universities also rise in international comparisons.

Nationals of EU and EEA member countries as well as Swiss nationals do not need visas or residence permits for Austria. When staying in Austria for longer than 3 months they, however, have to apply for a confirmation of registration at the immigration office within 3 months of entry to Austria. Other foreigners have, if they are staying for longer than 6 months, to apply for a residence permit for study purposes. The application will be sent to Austria and the decision has to be awaited in one’s home country therefore the application should be submitted at least 3 months before the intended arrival in Austria. Applicants who are allowed to enter Austria without a visa (information about this is available from the Austrian embassies) may apply for and receive the residence permit from the Immigration Office once they are in Austria.

Language of Study

The main language of study in Austria is German, and some programs are taught in English.

In order to be admitted to a degree program in German you have to prove sufficient knowledge of the language. At some universities you need proficiency in German corresponding to level B2, at others corresponding to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. There are different diplomas that are accepted, e.g. the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch, Austria’s officially recognized examination system for German as a foreign language with licensed examination centers all over the world.
